*DEVELOPED BY ME* Glass Textiles
An exploration of flexible and tensile systems in glass using the language of fibers. Students weave, felt, sew, bead, tear, fold and drape glass. Those with prior experience in electronics may elect to investigate wearable technologies in glass.
Veins of investigation include, but are not limited to, the following :
What /how is glass thread? How may we interpret societal metaphors of fibers and glass into the material to create meaning?
What do fiber substrates and tensile joinery make possible? What does component-based design of mixed-media entities look like?
Why /how to create responsive behavior through a flexible, particulate system? Can optical and haptic properties of glass result in flowing ,draping solutions that shift with interaction?
The course offers the option to self-organize as an inter-disciplinary think tank, in which members of a team bring different backgrounds to Glass + Textile.
The course is a fluid combination of visual lectures and demonstrations, practice and troubleshooting time, discussions and brainstorming, readings and student presentations, field trips and visiting artists.
