Introduction to Glassblowing (online)

How can we study glassblowing, a craft that relies on human breath, during a pandemic whose virus spreads through the respiratory system? What does an introduction to glassblowing without access to blowing glass look like? What principles of glassblowing translate into other media, and how do we build a relationship with a new material?

In this course, we will learn about glassblowing – the process, its history, current practitioners, the science and safety aspects – through a home-based experience. Exercises include * body movement, * physics, * simulation of glass processes using Isomalt, * remote teamwork and communication. Supply kits are provided to each student to facilitate the above studies within a residential space.

The course serves as an alternate technical foundation for students who intend to major in glass as well as provides insight into sculptural expression using thermal forming of liquids, no limited to glass.

(Note: This course was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical access to the glass studio was prohibited)
