Sculptural Glass
An emphasis on individual expression and experimentation with molten glass as a sculptural medium using processes in a kiln : fusing, slumping and casting. We will learn to * make models in materials such as clay, paper and wax, * build simple and complex molds out of rubber and plaster-based materials, * melt hot glass into molds in a kiln at up to 1600 deg F, * grind and polish cast pieces of glass.
Advanced students will learn to * design and compose distribution of materials within the glass casting to achieve effects, * experiment with kilns in unconventional ways, * understand how artists use glass kiln casting in their work, * produce multiples, not necessarily identical, and in complex formal and conceptual relationships.
Classes are a combination of A/V lecture, demonstration, practice and work time, critique and brainstorming, with homework and kiln monitoring duties each week. The goal is to be self-sufficient in sculpting, mold making and casting glass as well as having foundation to undertake such processes in other disciplines, and towards development of your own work in a broader manner.
